JAH BENG was born and grew up in the area known as Trench Town, in Kingston, Jamaica. As a youngster, he spent very little of his leisure time in “idle” play with his contemporaries. More often than not, he sought quiet places to “meditate” on social, religious, political and economic issues that were being explored and expressed in “controversial” and thought provoking songs by the “revolutionary” Rastafarian musical prophets of the time. On a daily basis, such issues had a major impact on his life and the lives of all those who inhabited the ghettos of Western Kingston and the entire island of Jamaica. Jah Beng quickly became conscious of this fact and speedily recognized the significance of and tuned in faithfully to the Rastafari frequency.

At a very early age, he demonstrated the ability to grasp, create, recreate and express the deepest levels of all these elements that influenced and would continue to shape his life. In this manner, he developed a prolific ability to pen his own lyrics along with the vocal ability to express his ideas melodically. While he was still a child, friends, family and strangers began tuning in to Jah Beng’s mellow voice, despite his best efforts to “sing his songs in secret”. Inevitably, he took to the live stage. Through his enigmatic presence and exceptional performing abilities, he gained many fans and earned opening act spots for musical artists such as Maxi Priest, Buju Banton, Anthony B, The Abyssinians etc. The depth and breadth of Jah Beng’s works and his great determination to continue to develop his art became quite evident to those around him.

Jah Beng’s talent and his disciplined ways brought him in contact with an extraordinary producer / songwriter and bassist, Charles ‘Tower’ Sinclair (of Kornerstone Productions). The two met and began working together, a few years after Jah Beng had migrated to Canada. The result of this collaboration is Jah Beng’s second album entitled "River of Healing" (the follow-up to his debut, Juno nominated CD,"Cry for the Children").

The first single release from the "River of Healing" album is a cover tune, "Biggest Part of Me". The CD contains 12 blazing tracks that highlight this musical artist’s various talents and his great versatility. The "River of Healing" CD confirms, for those who need confirmation, that Jah Beng is a potent and unstoppable musical force.

Jahbeng's 1998 Juno nominated debut CD "Cry For The Children" has become the benchmark by which other Canadian reggae artists are judged. It is music with a conscious message backed by the tight production wizardry of Charles "Tower" Sinclair, famed bassist of Messenjah. More than a year after the album's release, it continues to receive strong interest in diverse locales such as France, Jamaica and the United States. Not content to rest on this success, the Trenchtown born, Toronto bred Jahbeng is already hard at work writing songs for his sophomore album. He returns to the festival again this year with a well-deserved reputation as "one of the best reggae acts on the scene". [ The WORD - September 1999]
The first single from the "River Of Healing" CD entitled "Biggest Part Of Me" is currently the #1 Reggae track in Ghana on Uniiq FM 95.7, of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.
